There is no breaking in period, no areas of friction, they are perfect straight out of the box. I use various styles of Asolo shoes depending on the hike I'm going on.
Excellent and Rugged Boot By J the hunter from Boston, MA on 10/26/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I purchased these boots for general hiking and also to wear hunting in South Dakota. I did not have time to break the boots in, but found them comfortable and not too heavy. I had only one small blister after three days of constant wear. I spent two days slogging through muddy cornfields and tall grasses and found these boots comfortable, with good traction and excellent water resistance. While the boots are a little short to provide ultimate protection against water, even when water topped my boots, they were still comfortable. The water drained quickly out and was wicked away from my foot, so I could carry on walking without squelching around; having stepped in several ponds, I had only a slightly damp sock at the end of the day and my feet were not cold and wet. Can't wait to take these out hiking and snow shoveling.
Great for grouse hunting in the woods By Martha the Grouse Hunter from Edina, MN on 10/25/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Came in the mail, the next day we were in the northern woods of Minnesota hunting for grouse on three cold, rainy days. Were GREAT feeling. Sturdy, but not too heavy. Comfortable from the start. Loosened my upper laces after a couple hours, as the top part was rubbing a bit into my ankles. They were fine then. Waterproof and just a great boot. Hope to have them for years!
By Apu from Northern Maryland on 10/24/2009 Pros: Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Cons: Not Comfortable, Too Stiff/Not Flexible Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: I bought these boots to replace my last pair of boots (which lasted me 6 years). I read all of the reviews on here first and they sounded like good boots. When I recieved them I found that they were incredibly hard-soled and had no cushioning for the sole whatsoever. I went on a few day hikes and wore them on rainy days (they are very waterproof) and around my barn, but they didn't loosen up at all. I finally took them on a proper weekend long hiking trip and they actually injured my feet. I have to go to a specialist to find out what the damage is to the ball of my foot. I had to switch to sneakers after the first day, and haven't put them back on since. Very disappointing!
By sandman_max from Atlanta on 10/18/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I'm not really sure about the sizing. My feet have expanded recently and I've started buying sz 8 1/2. I ordered these in sz 9 and they feel a bit large. But a pair of sneakers I got recently are perfect in a sz 9. So are they too big? Just the right size but I ordered 1/2 sz too big? Who knows...at least I'll be able to wear bulky, wooly hiking socks this winter without any discomfort and that was one of my motives in ordering the 9's. And if I lace them snug at the ankles, my feet don't slide around with lighter weight socks. So they're comfortable either way and I'm tired of squishing my toes into too tight shoes.
By powderbunny from Lexington, SC on 10/15/2009 Best Uses: Day Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Haven't walked very far yet, but they did keep my feet nice and dry in deep puddles after days of rain.
The boots look nice and fit well. The boot tops seem a bit low to me and feel a bit funny where they hit my ankles. I find myself playing with the tongue to get a more comfortable fit. However, I wore them walking in the rain for several hours, and my feet stayed dry and felt fine afterward, so I think they will be okay. I guess I just like a bit more ankle support than these have.
Haven't tried any slick surfaces yet...so the verdict is still partially out.
Seems like a pretty good shoe for the price.
By Maui Girl from Worcester, MA on 10/06/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational, Environmentalist Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These are great boots. I just got them about 1 week ago and began breaking them in by walking my dog - no blisters and they are very comferatable. I have not taken them through very wet conditions but I am sure they will be fine. Also, they are suprisingly stylish. These are a great bang for your buck!
By Boston backpacker from Boston MA on 10/05/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Knowing these were backpacking boots, I started to break them in running small trips over time. I made a terrible mistake one morning, wearing socks to short for the boot. The fabric inside of the boot is very abrasive, like sandpaper, and my feet are cut up--which again was my fault. As long as you have a good thick pair of long wool socks, these fit amazingly well--in fact, the best fit I've ever had from a boot. No sliding, plenty of room in the toe box, easy to lace, and lighter than most of the backpacking boots I've worn--but very stiff on the onset.
By Carson from Port Townsend, WA on 10/05/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Environmentalist Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I use these for hiking year-round. These boots are a perfect fit for me (I wear 8-8 1/2 & purchased 8 1/2). I can wear med- to heavy-weight socks for warmth or comfort with no squeezed toes. I like the rubber toe-guards, sealed tongue, & that they're Gortex.
